The ARC Board, on June 23, officially adopted the recommendations of the Atlanta Strategic Truck Route Master Plan (ASTRoMaP). This 18-month effort resulted in the identification of a comprehensive regional truck route network. Truck traffic will be encouraged to utilize this network by a combination of publicity, coordination with other governmental agencies and longer-term infrastructure upgrades. The network will also serve as an integral part of the regional freight transportation network (along with the interstates, railroads, intermodal yards and airport). The ASTRoMaP network will also be used by ARC to help strategically allocate limited transportation funding.
In addition to the identified truck route network, the plan included a set of strategies and recommendations. These ranged from an extensive set of project recommendations to access management policies to strategies that mitigate the negative impact that heavy truck traffic has on nearby communities.
