ARC thanks all those who helped support the Georgia General Assembly in approving an historic transportation funding bill Wednesday night by overwhelming margins. The bill now goes to Governor Perdue for approval.
The legislation provides the opportunity for regions throughout the state to create a one percent regional sales tax for 10 years, to be voted on by citizens in the 2012 general primary. It creates 12 pre-defined regional districts across the state, with one being the 10-county ARC region. Local elected officials will work together to develop a project list that includes all transportation modes. The bill gives MARTA a three-year reprieve on the current funding restrictions requiring half of its tax revenue to be used for capital and half for operations. Should the referendum pass in the Metro Atlanta region, it will generate approximately $750 million annually.
